5 Exciting Ways to Keep Yourself Motivated to Work Out

One of the most difficult parts of working out is staying motivated to exercise. Many people start a regimen but end up quitting after a few weeks or months due to a lack of motivation. To avoid getting stuck with a membership to a gym you never attend, here are five great ways to keep yourself motivated to keep working out.

1- Have a Friend or Workout Partner

Working out with a friend or partner can be a great way to make sure you keep going to the gym. If you don’t have anyone to work out with or would prefer to work out alone, you can ask a friend to hold you accountable. Having someone reach out to you once or twice a week and ask if you’ve been working out can be a great motivator, especially if it’s someone to whom you’d be embarrassed to say, “No, I didn’t.”

2- Set Goals

“I want to lose weight” is a common reason for going to the gym. However, it’s a bit vague. After a few weeks of not making much progress, it can be easy to lose motivation and stop going to the gym. However, having attainable, realistic, and trackable goals can help you stick to your schedule.

Instead of “I want to get in shape,” for example, consider setting a goal like “I want to lose 10 pounds this month” or “I want to be able to run a mile in eight minutes.” Defined goals are easier to keep because you can also see yourself making progress. Once you lose five pounds or run a mile in nine minutes, you’ll be motivated to keep going.

3- Reward Yourself

Having a reward system is a great way to make sure that gym membership doesn’t go to waste. If you go to the gym three times this week, you could reward yourself with a delicious dessert that doesn’t normally fit your diet plan. This can also be combined with the above tips, like having your partner take you out to a movie if your weekly goals are achieved.

4- Get a Personal Trainer or Join a Class

Structured workouts at a fitness studio or gym can make exercising easier, especially if you have a friend attending the same fitness class. Knowing that you’ve paid extra to attend classes or meet with a trainer will be an added incentive to stick to your workout plan.

5- Choose the Right Activity

Finally, remember that working out can be fun and doesn’t have to feel like work. If you enjoy the elliptical and hate weight training, don’t feel obligated to stop by the bench press. It doesn’t even need to be at a gym; taking a hike or walking on a beach can be great exercise, too. Be open to trying new activities so you can find what best interests you.

Although it can be difficult to stay motivated and keep to a workout schedule, by following these tips, you can stay committed to achieving your fitness goals. Good luck!
